Yay!!!! Bella won!!!

by Christi on September 28, 2009

I just got word that Bella won the art contest for the Aaron Brother’s location that her piece was at (each store has a winner). I am SO excited for her! After a little thought we decided we would let her find out tomorrow at school, so that she could tell us the good news. So I will work extra hard to not tell her in the morning, but I’m SO excited! She’s going to be thrilled. She was really excited just to take part – so I can’t imagine how thrilled she will be when she finds out she won. She already loves art class, and I’m sure that this will just reinforce that love.

Adoption, allergies and teeth.

by Christi on September 28, 2009

Quite the odd title, but that was my day!

Bella had the day off school so we dropped off some medical forms at the doctor’s office for our adoption homestudy, and than headed to B’s allergist.  After a good year of research, we decided to start Bella on allergy drops.  Her allergies have such a negative impact on her life, but I just wasn’t ready to put her through allergy shots.  I did them as a child, and know they are effective, but I know they also become your extra-curricular activity, and she’s about as shot phobic as they come.  Her drops came in last week, so we went to pick them up and give her the first dose in office to watch for any reaction.

Well imagine my surprise when I am giving her the drops and I see an adult tooth BEHIND her baby teeth!   She’s yet to lose any teeth (something she’s not terribly happy about, given that kids a year or two younger have, and she’s really anxious to cash in on this tooth fairy deal – I mean it’s a FAIRY and it leaves MONEY – what’s not to like???).   So, while she has yet to loose any teeth, she has her first adult one.  I put a quick call into our dentist and was told that it’s not uncommon.

I felt a little less freaked out when I realized this was not a sure sign of $$$ at the orthodontist one day (though if her mother’s history is any indication, we might as well start paying the orthodontist now – kind of like orthodonic layaway – I had headgear, braces, rubber bands, and anything else they could attach to my teeth).   The baby teeth in front of the adult tooth are loose, should fall out soon, and the tooth should move forward and into place no problem.   Go figure!    I’m sure she’ll be excited to show her new tooth off tomorrow at school.

As of tomorrow we should have most of our adoption paperwork turned in to get the homestudy going, and hopefully get our certification to adopt in Arizona wrapped up soon.  We have an appointment set up with one of the great adoption attorneys in Phoenix, the one who’s name we hear over and over when people adopt.    We’ve spent years talking about adoption, and making the decision to adopt, so it’s exciting to finally get to the point where we are taking the steps to making it happen!

Our Little Artist

by Christi on September 26, 2009

A few weeks ago I got a permission slip about some kind of art contest from Bella’s art teacher.  I signed it, sent it back, and didn’t think too much of it.  This week we found out that one of her pieces of art was selected for a contest that Aaron Brothers is holding.  So tonight we headed over to the store to check out her artwork and cast our votes for it (of course!).

She was super excited to see her picture.  She even convinced a family in the store to vote for her piece (they are convinced she’ll one day have a spot on the student council with her sales skills).

Sure it would be fun is she won for that store, but regardless it was a really exciting experience for her.  I loved art class as a kid, probably more than any other class, and she seems to enjoy her art class just as much.  I hope that this experience inspires her to keep using her creativity through art.

Let the Halloween Decorating Begin

by Christi on September 24, 2009

Bella and I LOVE Fall & Halloween.  LOVE.  When September rolls around both of us are always anxious to pull out the decorations, though we try and hold off a while, as Rick seems to think that Fall decor and 110 degree weather don’t go together. So this afternoon we pulled out three great big Rubbermaid totes full of our Fall decorations.   Each year I continue to be amazed at how absorbed in everything Bella becomes.  She will sit and play with the glittery spiders and our Lemax Spooky Town Witch’s Hat for hours.   Her little imagination just goes to work, and it’s such a cool thing to watch.   I remember as a kid doing the same thing – I loved all the holiday decorations, and my mom always put up so many for us to enjoy.   I hope it’s a tradition that one day Bella continues with her children.

Decorating for Halloween 2008

It was this time last year that Bella broke her ankle at a birthday party.   I remember we found a few adult Halloween socks that we would put over her boot when she was in the house.   Boy she was a trooper with that ankle – eight weeks in that boot and she almost NEVER complained.   Though it did have a few perks – I think she was line leader at school every day for two months – which is a coveted position when you are in kindergarten.   She got out of her boot a day or two before Halloween, which she was really excited about (the boot didn’t work so well with a princess costume).

Our fall decorating will continue for the next few days.  Rick and Bella are off at Michael’s right now picking out a new Spooky Town house to add to our collection for this year.   This weekend we’ll get Halloween lights up on the front of the house, as well as the outdoor decorations.    Now if we could just do something about the 100+ temperatures….
